Carpenter Ant Control in South Houston and Brazoria County

Large black ants wandering across the kitchen at night get attention fast. In the Alvin and South Houston area, a good share of those visitors turn out to be carpenter ants, and where they walk tells you a lot about what is happening inside your walls.

Carpenter ants do not eat wood the way termites do. They excavate it to build smooth galleries for their colony, and they favor wood that has taken on moisture. Our humid Gulf Coast climate, frequent rain, and slab-on-grade homes with plenty of mulch and shade trees give them plenty of places to settle in.

How to Recognize Carpenter Ants

Workers range from about a quarter inch to half an inch long, usually black or dark reddish brown, with a single node between the thorax and abdomen and an evenly rounded upper body when viewed from the side. Several sizes of worker often share one colony, so seeing both large and mid-sized ants together is a strong clue.

Foraging usually happens after dark. A flashlight trip around the foundation, window frames, and the base of trees after sunset often turns up trails headed toward a nest. Winged ants appearing indoors in spring suggest a mature colony close by. If you are unsure whether you are looking at carpenter ants or termite swarmers, our guide to telling termite swarmers from flying ants is a useful companion to this article.

Warning Signs Inside the Home

  • Fine sawdust-like shavings, called frass, piled beneath baseboards, door frames, or wall voids
  • A faint rustling sound inside walls on quiet evenings
  • Ant trails running along pipes, wires, or the edges of the garage
  • Winged reproductives in light fixtures or on window sills

Frass often contains bits of insect parts alongside wood fibers, which separates it from the coarse pellets some other wood-boring insects leave behind.

Where Nests Hide in Our Area

Parent colonies typically live outdoors in stumps, dead limbs, fence posts, or landscape timbers. Satellite colonies then move into the house, often through a spot where moisture has softened the wood. Common locations include roof leaks, window and door trim, bathroom and kitchen plumbing walls, attic framing near vents, and wood decks touching soil.

Tree branches that touch the roofline give ants a bridge. Firewood stacked against the siding gives them a staging area. Trimming vegetation back from the structure and keeping wood off the ground take away much of that opportunity.

Why DIY Sprays Usually Fall Short

Store-bought sprays kill the workers you can see, which are only a small share of the colony. The queen and brood stay safely tucked inside the wall or tree, and the colony keeps sending out replacements. Spraying can also split a colony into several groups, which spreads the problem to more rooms.

Lasting control starts with locating the nest, then treating it directly while reducing the conditions that drew the ants in. A trained technician knows where to look and which products and placements fit each situation.

What Professional Treatment Looks Like

Your technician begins with an inspection of the exterior and interior, following trails and checking moisture-prone areas. Treatment targets nesting sites and entry points, with exterior barrier applications around the foundation, and spot treatments where activity shows up inside. Our residential pest control program includes regular exterior service and interior treatment when you need it, which keeps carpenter ant pressure low through the year.

Because carpenter ants often signal a moisture problem, we point out leaks, rotted trim, and drainage issues we notice so you can get them repaired. If we see signs that point to termites instead, we will let you know and walk you through our termite treatment options.

Steps You Can Take Today

  1. Fix plumbing leaks and replace water-damaged wood.
  2. Trim branches and shrubs so nothing touches the house.
  3. Move firewood and lumber at least twenty feet from the structure.
  4. Keep mulch a few inches below the siding and out of contact with wood trim.
  5. Seal gaps around utility lines and window frames.
