Ant Control in South Houston: Identifying the Species Before You Treat

Not all ant problems are the same, and treating them as if they are is the most common reason ant problems in South Houston homes persist long after treatment. The products, application methods, and even the timing that work for one species often have little to no effect on another. Getting identification right before reaching for anything is the step most homeowners skip.

Brazoria County and the greater Houston metro are home to several ant species that regularly enter structures or cause yard problems. Four of them account for the vast majority of calls we respond to.

Odorous House Ants

Odorous house ants (Tapinoma sessile) are small, dark brown to black ants roughly an eighth of an inch long. The name comes from the distinctive rotten coconut smell they produce when crushed — a reliable field identification if you're close enough to test it. They move in defined trails along baseboards, counters, and plumbing lines and are most often discovered in kitchens and bathrooms near moisture sources.

Odorous house ants are one of the most bait-sensitive species in the region, which is good news for treatment. Gel bait placed along their travel trails is highly effective because workers carry it back to the colony and feed it to nestmates. The challenge is that odorous house ant colonies have multiple queens and can split under treatment pressure — a phenomenon called budding — which can cause a small problem to appear to spread before it resolves. Patience with bait is important; results often take ten days to three weeks to fully materialize.

What doesn't work well: broadcast sprays applied along the trail often repel workers without reaching the colony. If you've sprayed and the trail moved rather than disappeared, that's odorous house ants reacting to a repellent product.

Fire Ants

The red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) needs little introduction for anyone who's spent time in a South Houston yard. They build the characteristic dome-shaped mounds visible above ground, but the colony itself extends deep below the surface — which is why surface-only treatments are so frequently ineffective. A mature colony can contain hundreds of thousands of workers, and polygyne colonies (those with multiple queens) are the dominant type on the Texas Gulf Coast.

Fire ant bait treatment applied broadcast across the yard during peak foraging conditions is the most effective professional approach. Bait is picked up by foraging workers and carried back to feed the queen. A properly timed broadcast treatment suppresses yard populations significantly over two to four weeks. For active mounds near high-traffic areas like play equipment or walkways, targeted mound treatment provides faster knockdown while bait works on the broader population.

Yard granulation and treatment is included at every Green Country residential pest control visit. Fire ant management in South Houston requires ongoing maintenance rather than a single treatment because polygyne colonies expand aggressively and neighboring untreated properties continuously contribute to re-infestation pressure.

Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants (Camponotus species) are the largest ants commonly found in South Houston homes, with workers ranging from a quarter inch to over half an inch in length. They are typically black or black and red and move slowly compared to smaller ant species. Carpenter ants do not eat wood — they excavate it to build galleries for nesting, which distinguishes the damage they cause from termite damage. Finding coarse sawdust-like frass (a mix of wood shavings and insect parts) near baseboards, window frames, or structural wood is a reliable sign of an active carpenter ant nest.

Carpenter ants prefer wood that has been softened by moisture or previous decay, which makes them both a pest problem and a symptom of a moisture problem worth addressing. Finding an active colony inside the home warrants a closer look at the plumbing, roof line, or any area where water may be entering or accumulating. Treatment targets the nest directly when it can be located, along with perimeter treatment to intercept foraging workers entering from outside.

Crazy Ants

Tawny crazy ants (Nylanderia fulva) have expanded rapidly across the Houston metro over the past two decades and are now firmly established throughout Brazoria County. They are immediately recognizable by their erratic, non-linear movement — they don't follow trails the way other ant species do, which gives them their common name. They are reddish-brown, slightly larger than odorous house ants, and often appear in very large numbers.

Crazy ants are drawn to electrical equipment, which creates a real damage risk beyond the nuisance factor. They nest in a wide variety of locations — under mulch, in soil, inside wall voids, in outdoor equipment — which makes colony location difficult. They are notably resistant to many standard ant baits, which is why general consumer products often fail completely against them. Professional treatment targeting multiple nest sites with products specific to crazy ant behavior is more effective than a general perimeter spray.

If you're seeing ants that move erratically in very high numbers, particularly around the AC unit, electrical boxes, or outdoor junction points, crazy ants are the likely culprit. This is a species worth calling about rather than attempting to address with store products.
